[Introduction] The fifth issue of the first volume of The Woman’s Voice Biweekly published Li Xuying’s poem “Life’s Path” along with an illustration. Starting from the eighth issue, her novel of the same name, Life’s Path, was serialized. Unfortunately, the serialization ended with the magazine’s termination, leaving the full story unseen. The female protagonist of the story comes from a wealthy family, possesses artistic talent, yet faces many hardships, struggling through emotional and dutiful trials amidst societal changes. It’s not hard to see that much of the author’s own experience is reflected here. The poem “Life’s Path” consists of nineteen lines, and currently, ten chapters of the serialized novel are available, with each chapter titled by a line from the poem. Based on this, there are at least nine more chapters to come. The novel uses Li Xuying’s pen name ‘Xu Yin 絮因。’ The title of the novel was designed as graphic characters, and each chapter includes an illustration, both done by the author. The poem is transcribed and translated here, and the available parts of the novel are collected on Xuying’s prose page.

Life’s Path
Life’s path,
So uneven.
Even the blind,
Try to feel their way with a cane.
How much more then, those who still see,
Clearly recognize:
The winding road,
Where butterflies and orioles court.
In desolate, vast wilds,
Reaching up to the boundless skies.
Streams murmur in sorrow,
Echoes resonate through empty valleys.
Dimness —
Brightness —
How can one truly tell them apart?
Once clarity is grasped,
The path grows all the more rough.
This uneven path,
Is precisely life.
