Sugiura Hisui 杉浦非水

Sugiura Hisui (1876 – 1965) was a pioneer of modern Japanese graphic design. He was trained in both traditional Japanese painting and western style art, and studied modern graphic design in Europe in his forties. His work combines elements from Art Nouveau, Art Deco and classical Japanese components. He is mostly famous for posters and book covers design.

The Artist Magazine (Taiwan) featured an article “A Hundred Flowers Bloom: Sugiura Hisui’s ‘Hisui’s Painting Manual of Hundred Flowers'” (#557, October 2021, pp218-227). First time reading about this artist, the similarity in style between his painting and some of my grandma’s floral sketches caught my attention. Hisui’s collection was first published in 1922, and Grandma’s paintings were probably done in the 40s. I wonder if Grandma had studied Hisui’s work or a blending or east and west at that time would lead to that style anyways.

Here are some paintings from Hisui’s collection (from the above mentioned magazine article):

Here are some resources I found on Hisui and Japanese modern graphic design in general:
